In Japan, an MF transformer from STS in Stockach is speeding across the tracks

A new model has been in service between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka since the beginning of July 2020, and it has some impressive features on board. The front end, for example, has been made a bit sleeker to optimize aerodynamics and reduce noise. Passengers, meanwhile, will be pleased with all kinds of comfort features. The N700S - S stands for Supreme - is said to transmit fewer vibrations than its predecessor.

The big attraction of the new Shinkansen, however, is its lithium-ion battery. In the event of an overhead line failure, the battery ensures that the train still reaches the next station.

Starting with this generation, the auxiliary converter (HBU) of the new N700S now also features an MF transformer from STS. This transmits 70 kVA at 12 kHz and ensures the power supply in bi-directional operation.

With the help of the shock and vibration resistant design (DIN EN 61373) in the PD4 outdoor area and the reliable insulation properties (DIN EN 50124-1), our engineers have developed a transformer that will fulfill its function for the next 30 years in the new N700S in Japan.
